“Your Part Required”
Several times I’ve printed the verse from Joshua 3:5 and sent it to you. Here it is again: Joshua is speaking to the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things.” We all get excited about things that are “amazing!” But, while “amazing” can happen from God (after all He’s God so can do whatever He desires whenever He wants), it generally requires effort on our part. First, consecration is a deliberate surrender of ourselves completely to the Lordship of Christ. Consecration is actually a spiritual act and is something God does within us BUT, that can only happen when we yield ourselves – mind, body and soul into His care. The Lord informed Joshua of this and told him to tell the Israelites. If they would surrender and depend upon the Lord they would witness “amazing” tomorrow and coming days.
Here a few examples of doing our part. Let’s say you need a job and have been fervently praying for one. Are you praying without looking or are you doing everything possible to find a job? Your marriage is crumbling and you’re asking the Lord to heal the brokenness – but are you willing to accept half the blame (in some cases you may be the total blame) and do whatever it takes to restore the relationship? Are you simply casting blame or accepting your share of responsibility for the problems?
We love to talk about answers to prayer and it’s exciting to tell others what God has done. I wonder sometimes though, about the stories not being told about God’s goodness. How many blessings or “AMAZING” things have we missed out on simply because we expect God to do everything? Consecration also involves getting alone with God, reading His Word, praying and sitting quietly meditating upon Him. Put yourself in a position to hear from God, then do what He says. I’m convinced, when we do our part, He always comes through with His part and more! The Bible says “Seek ye first the kingdom of God” (Matt. 6:33). Simply put, in EVERYTHING put God first – that’s our part. Giving directions to repentant hearts is His part. If you and I will do our part, we can consistently be looking for some AMAZING things to happen. What are amazing things? Things only God can do and He does them because He loves us and He knows we love Him.
