“Life Changing Faith”
The Bible doesn’t give a clear definition of faith but, Hebrews 11:1a describes the faith that pleases God. The writer says, “Now faith is being SURE of what we hope for…”. The word sure is translated “substance” which can also be translated as “confidence.” So Faith is what gives us confidence in what we hope for as Christians. Interestingly, the Greek word for faith is “PISTIS” which means “a firm persuasion or conviction.” So faith is a CONVICTION about something felt so strongly that when we commit ourselves to it; it changes our lives. How does this relate to God?
Is there a difference between “believing” in God and having “faith” in God? I think there is. For example, we believe that Adolph Hitler existed. Are we Nazis because we believe in Hitler? No! We would have to commit our lives to following him. The same is true of God if we believe in Him in the Biblical sense. Believing God exists is not the same as putting our “Faith”, a firm persuasion or conviction so strongly we commit our lives to Him.
Faith does not simply believe in God; it ACTS upon what God has said. Hebrews 11:6b says: “…anyone who comes to him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek him.” It is not enough to believe in a Cosmic Creator; we must believe that God is a moral and just God who rewards the faith put in Him by believers. Ephesians 2:8 declares, “For it is by grace you have been saved, THROUGH FAITH – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” John says, “Whoever believes (places their faith) in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned…” (3:18). Faith is more than merely believing – acting on what God says. When we do, our life is changed from the inside out. Romans 10:13 may be the verse many of you are looking for: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Pray the prayer and TRUST God to do what He said He’d do. This step is necessary for life change!
