“Strength and Courage”
Who doesn’t need more power and courage to face the challenges of life? Everyone can enjoy a sunny, warm and blue sky day when there are no issues pressing. The reality is though, that storms come and some are very severe. To make matters worse, they often appear suddenly and without warning. Such was the case when Moses died and the Lord appointed Joshua as the new leader of the Israelites.
It has always been intriguing to me that in Joshua chapter one, three times the Lord tells Joshua to “be strong and courageous” and once, “be strong and very courageous.” Obviously God knew the dangers the Israelites would encounter on their way to the Promised Land and the frustrations Joshua himself would face. There is an emphatic message the Lord gave this new leader which applies to us today. In Joshua (1:7,8) we read, “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to OBEY ALL the law my servant Moses gave you; DO NOT turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. DO NOT let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; MEDITATE on it day and night, so that you may DO everything written in it.”
God wants us to be faithful to Him. Not just on our good days, but to trust Him when our back is to the wall. Even when we are facing situations that are virtually impossible for us to change. Joshua certainly faced battles he couldn’t win by his own wisdom or strength. But the Lord had promised, “He would never leave nor forsake him” (v 5). You may be going through a dark time in your life right now. Let me encourage you find strength and courage in God’s Word. When we learn what God says and follow His guidance (not turning to the temptations on the right or left) He will give us what we need to press on. Victory comes when we continue to move forward in obedience to the Lord. His promise of, “I will be with you; I will never leave nor forsake you,” includes you!
